  16. <p>     This Compact was written by Pilgrim leaders as a means of
  17. establishing a form of government for themselves and the 70
  18. others who had joined them when they sailed from Plymouth,
  19. England in September 1620.
  20. </p>
  21. <p>     IN The Name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten,
  22. the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the
  23. Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King,
  24. Defender of the Faith, etc. Having undertaken for the Glory of
  25. God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of
  26. our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first colony in the
  27. northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and
  28. mutually in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and
  29. combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for out
  30. better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends
  31. aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame,
  32. such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and
  33. Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and
  34. convenient for the general Good of the Colony; unto which we
  35. promise all due Submission and Obedience. In WITNESS whereof we
  36. have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the eleventh of
  37. November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King James of
  38. England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth and of Scotland, the
  39. fifty-fourth. Anno Domini, 1620
